Chronic rhinitis in children is a condition where the inflammation to the lining of the nose results in symptoms such as runny nose, nasal congestion, sneezing and postnasal drip. This condition can be caused by allergies (allergic rhinitis), irritants like smoke or pollution (non-allergic rhinitis) or even frequent viral and bacterial sinus infections. Children with chronic rhinitis may also breathe through their mouth, snore at night or have trouble concentrating during the day due to poor sleep quality.
Management starts with identifying the cause. If allergies are suspected, your child’s doctor may recommend allergy testing. Treatment may include oral antihistamines, nasal steroid or antihistamine sprays, saline rinses and avoiding known triggers. When symptoms persist despite medical therapy or if complications such as chronic sinus infections or enlarged adenoids are suspected, a referral to our specialists at ENT for Kids is helpful. Our physicians can perform a more detailed nasal examination using a small scope. If medical therapy has been unsuccessful, our team may recommend treatments like adenoid removal or reduction of the nasal humidity bones if structural issues or severe inflammation are present. With the right care, most children can experience significant relief from their symptoms.
