A sleep study, also known as an overnight polysomnogram, is the test used to diagnose obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) in children in adults. This is an overnight test performed in a pediatric sleep lab. The test does not involve any shots or pain, but rather several monitors for the brain, heart, lungs and legs during monitored sleep.
During your visit, your provider may recommend a sleep study. This can be requested for several reasons including: very young children with sleep issues, children with weight concerns and sleep difficulties and children with lower muscle tone.
When a sleep study is ordered, our team will assist with processing. This includes preparing the necessary request and obtaining authorization from your insurance provider when required. Please allow 3-5 business days for processing your child’s order.
Our team partners with two local facilities to perform pediatric sleep studies.

Your provider will receive the report from your child’s sleep study to review about 7 days after completion of the study. Based on the results, a follow up appointment will be arranged to review the study results and plan for care. Outcomes after sleep study can include observation, medical management, surgical intervention or positive pressure sleep masks such as CPAP. Your provider will review your child’s results and make recommendations about care.
Unfortunately, our office staff does not have access to this information. Only the facility performing your exam and your insurance company will have access to and provide this information to you.
The facility will also be able to provide you with a CPT (or procedure) code that corresponds with the type of study being done. We recommend calling your insurance company directly with this code. They will be able to provide you with the most accurate and up-to-date information regarding benefits, coverage, and cost.
The order for your child’s study will be sent to the most appropriate of our partnered facilities. This decision will be made based on a few different factors including: provider preference, urgency, insurance eligibility and type of study required.
If you have any additional questions or concerns, please reach out to our office via the patient portal or at entforkids@floridapediatrics.com.
