Chronic Congestion

Chronic nasal congestion in children is a common concern and can negatively affect a child’s breathing, sleep and mood. Unlike a cold that clears within a week or two, chronic congestion lasts for several weeks or months. Symptoms may include persistent stuffy or runny nose, mouth breathing, snoring, restless sleep, or a nasal-sounding voice. Parents may also notice that their child struggles to breathe through their nose or frequently rubs or blows their nose without much relief.

There are several possible causes of chronic nasal congestion in children including allergies, enlarged adenoids, chronic sinusitis or irritants such as secondhand smoke. In younger children, foreign bodies in the nose can cause congestion particularly on one side. In older children, problems like a deviated nasal septum could also contribute. To determine the cause, our providers begin with a thorough history and physical exam. In some cases, allergy testing or imaging studies such as a CT scan of the sinuses may be recommended.

Treatment depends on the underlying cause. If allergies are suspected, nasal steroid or antihistamine sprays may be prescribed. Strategies to limit allergen exposure (like using air purifiers or keeping pets out of bedrooms) may also be helpful. For children with large adenoids or chronic sinus infections, treatment might include a trial of antibiotics or nasal saline rinses. Mouth breathing and snoring, especially if they interfere with sleep, may signal a more significant obstruction that needs closer attention.

Referral to our specialists at ENT for Kids is important if your child’s congestion doesn’t improve with standard treatments, if there are signs of sleep-disordered breathing (like loud snoring or pauses in breathing during sleep), or if structural problems are suspected. Our physicians can perform a more detailed exam using a small camera to look inside the nose and throat, and may recommend surgical options such as adenoidectomy or correction of a deviated septum if needed. Early evaluation and treatment can help improve breathing, sleep, and overall well-being.
